“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that?
We must have perseverance and, above all,
confidence in ourselves.
We must believe that we are gifted for something,
and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained”

Who is Screenhaus ? We are Designers and Screen Printers specialising in fabric yardage to fashion & furnishing.  We see ourselves as catalysts – a bridge to make yardage possible on-shore.

Driven by Principal Designer / Printer – Stephen Woods, we are situated in St. Peters, (Newtown District) in Sydney, we believe in the Australian design aesthetic, production skills and capability of the new guard of catalysts pushing fashion at ground level through to our local, national and export markets. Australia is truly a land of opportunity and we believe that the culture we have is truly unique. Australia is truly egalitarian, in the way that talent, attitude and hard work can take anyone without exception, to the top. We have the gift of being a nation of migrants from every corner of the globe. We are designers and cutters and makers drawing on the experience and heritage of every nation in the world – and therefore, one of the true melting pots – we get to mix and learn and grow and invent the future rather than living in the past.

With this in mind we love the current period of design and creative emphasis where design has permeated every aspect of our lives. With this though is the need for production skills – real skills where Australia is producing product – we need every generation to have access and real production skills to foster this creative energy. So we can continue to invent the ‘tomorrow’ of textiles, through truly living today.

Our name Screenhaus is a salute to art movements like Dadaism and the absurd, expressionism and the expression of light, street art and the voice of modern sub cultures, the timeless language of Aboriginal arts, architecture and the triumph over restriction, the NSK collective and the art of polarisation, the 20th Century propaganda of Russia, China, Cuba and the west in retaliation, A salute to the Yellow House(s), NIDA, Monty Python, Bondi, Luna Park, Baskerville, Goudy, Picasso, Ducati, Rock & Roll, FUBU, Punk Rock, Kubrick, Tarantino, Beresford, Ford, Grunge, Lloyd-Wright, Co Co Chanel, Yves Saint-Laurent, Alexander McQueen … A salute to great design as a map to a better way to build or cut or print but also a salute to the everyday artists that produce the physical product. To bake a danish pastry, to sew a perfect A-line mini, grow an apple tree or build a house or chair.

We don’t pretend to be experts in art history or even all that is listed above – but we do love the impacts of their art on both fashion and furnishings as genres of design and also their effect on the Australian design vernacular as it is being expressed upon on the future of design … their effect on tomorrow – your effect on tomorrow.

Our art is for the everyday.

Our art is to be lived in as a physical statement of our culture as expressed by us – the designers – the cutters – the pattern makers – the printers – the communicators – the people.
